Space: The Final Frontier

NeversDesignMontessori

Space: The Final Frontier

August 26th to August 30th

“I didn’t feel like a giant.  I felt very, very small.”

~Neil Armstrong on looking back at the Earth from the Moon in July 1969.

Recent discoveries are changing the frontier of space exploration…from deep space satellites several solar systems away, to black holes and asteroids, to SpaceX’s reusable rockets and plans to get to Mars.

We’ll make our own discoveries, learning about the characteristics of planets and solar systems in our galaxy.

“10, 9, 8, 7….”

Can you Dig It?!

August 19th to August 23rd

During “rawrsome” week, the class will be “digging” up information about our prehistoric world, dating back to the days of the dinosaurs.

While dinosaurs may be extinct from the face of the planet, but they are alive and well in our imaginations.

We’ll discover prehistoric wonders as we explore the galleries, learn about our dinosaurs, and even handle real fossils! Enjoy the great outdoors as we play games, safari through nature, and discover what Canada was like 70 million years ago.

“If history repeats itself, I am so getting a dinosaur.” ~Anonymous

Under the Sea!

August 12th to August 16th

Did you know that New Brunswick is home to the warmest ocean waters north of the Carolinas?

Also, no part of New Brunswick is more than 180 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean!

Our fertile ocean playground is home to some very unique and interesting ocean flora and sea life, and we will be investigating some of the more peculiar species native to our province.

We will also discuss conservation, and how we can preserve our precious rivers, lakes and oceans.

All the World’s a Stage!

August 6th to August 9th

Note:  Monday August 5th is a Holiday

Do we have any budding actors or directors in our midst?  Most of us have been to both live theatre at the Capital Theatre or movies at Cineplex…which do you prefer, and why?

We will debate the difference of each type of theatre, and end the week with our own original puppet show, and one performed by a professional puppet troupe.

“Exit…stage left!”

Send in the Clowns!

Send in the Clowns!

July 29th to August 2nd

Under the big tent, the debate will be had: Circus versus Carnival?

Both are fun, but what are the differences?  Everyone will have an opinion, and as the week progresses, the clowns, tight rope walkers and ring masters will have to defend their trade versus the wonderful rides and games of chance that are trademarks of the carnival.

“Step right up…fun for all ages!”

Junior Travelers Club!

July 15th to July 19th

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”― Mark Twain

Our “Junior Travelers Club” will take the week planning their trips, deciding where to go and how to get there, rules of road safety, and finally making sure they packed what they need, including their passports.  A field trip to the Moncton Airport wraps up the week.

“Boarding at Gate #1 will commence shortly!”

Shinrin-yoku!

NeversDesignMontessori

Shinrin-yoku!

June 24th to June 28th

Last year, Kingswood developed a section of our outdoor forest into a “Shinrin-yoku” centre (Japanese term for “Forest Bathing”) and several outdoor classroom settings.  Our students will be experiencing the benefits of this outdoor therapy as they study flora during this nature week.

Respect for our planet through concepts of sustainability, resource conservation, composting and water capture are just a few of the other themes the students will explore.

We will also be visiting a local nursery and bringing back a tree to plant at Kingswood.

A trip through the Turtle Creek Reservoir will provide a hands-on view of how we must work with nature to preserve our planet.

“Indoors, we tend to use only two senses, our eyes and our ears. Outside is where we can smell the flowers, taste the fresh air, look at the changing colours of the trees, hear the birds singing and feel the breeze on our skin. And when we open up our senses, we begin to connect to the natural world.” ~Dr. Qing Li
